Released almost a decade ago, the Logitech C920 still stands out as one of the best webcams out there, which is saying something. In an industry that sees leaps and bounds in technological advances every few months, it’s rare for a device –let alone a webcam –see such longevity.

Many of the best budget laptops come with webcams, and many smartphones can be converted into a webcam using the right software, but for many PC users, a stand-alone webcam that can deliver crisp images with little to no grain, noise, or lag is essential, especially in our post-pandemic, everyone-is-streaming-something world.

The Logitech C920: Beating the Webcam Lifespan

Released in 2018, the Logitech C920 wasn’t exactly the pinnacle of camera tech, but what it lacked in innovation it made up for in good quality build. Basically, Logitech decided to take winning webcam formulae and decided to implement it perfectly.

First, the size. Stand-alone webcams need to be small and almost invisible; this allows people who want to stream or just want to go on their umpteenth Zoom call for work to have themselves visible on camera without the actual camera being an impediment. The C920 allows this by measuring in at just under 1.14 x 3.70 x 0.94 inches, making it fit wherever you put it without it becoming too much of an eyesore.

It also comes in with a 1080p glass lens. Back in 2012, this was somewhat of a premium feature. Now, however, this is pretty standard fare, but because of how relatively old the device is, you’re getting something premium for a not-so premium price. It also comes with a 5-foot cable, which means you can avoid having to awkwardly maneuver the device into position just so it fits to your CPU. It’s an essential podcast equipment for the newbie and an essential streaming camera for videogame streamers, all for a fraction of the price of ‘professional’ equipment.

The Logitech C920: The Best Budget ‘Premium’ Webcam

Again, because it’s older than most devices, a lot of the features the camera offers seem pretty standard: it comes with automatic light correction technology, premium autofocus, and two, hidden, side-mounted microphones on either side of the camera itself. The camera also features automatic noise reduction and automatic low light correction. Again, standard fare for modern cams, but for a 2012 model at 2012 prices, this isn’t half-bad at all. Sure, some of the best vlogging cameras under $100 can take video, but it’s not going to be as good as what the Logitech C920 can deliver.

However, because it’s older than most devices, a lot of the features of the Logitech C920 come at a much lower price point than its competitors. Because the build quality was so good, Logitech’s C920 defies the webcam lifespan, making it our top pick for the best budget ‘premium’ webcam for the everyday user. It’s compatible with every Windows version since 7 and works with Mac OS 10.10 and later.

The Logitech C920 starts at around $78 on Amazon, it’s so much cheaper than any of the newer premium webcams out there that offer practically the same features. Sure, it might not have the Razer Kiyo’s ring light or the Mevo’s 4k recording capabilities, but ask yourself: do you really need either of those things for your Among Us Twitch stream?
